Interesting tid-bit of history! Thanks, Brian.

Another bit of trivia for you… the FIRST president who was born as a Citizen of the United States of America was…the 8th President, Martin Van Buren! All the rest were British subjects when they were born!

Atchison, owner of many slaves and a plantation, was a prominent pro-slavery activist and Border Ruffian leader, deeply involved with violence against abolitionists and other free-staters during the “Bleeding Kansas” events.

This is kind of a “Ripley’s Believe it or Not” fact, though—something that’s fun to say, but that doesn’t stand up under scrutiny. “It was said” is true enough, though.

Of course, there have been several other occasions when the President’s term ended/began on a Sunday. All of the rest had a private swearing-in on the appointed day (March 4 or starting in 1937 January 20), with the public celebration on the following Monday.

What about the Speaker of the House? I thought he was next in line after the VP. Have things changed?

Outstanding rendering of Atchison, too — perfectly captured from period photographs…
