Sadly, this is true in some places. But far from all. I live in MA so teachers do very well here. One of my friends will retire in a few years at age 60 with a pension of ~$64k/year and her current salary is almost $90k with summers off (for the most part) to enjoy her house on the lake. My sister-in-law and her hubby both retired after teaching careers in wisconsin and their pensions are enviable. My sister-in-law was able to retire at 58. She could have done so earlier but was waiting to retire the same year as her husband as the plan was to move back east.
I still remember walking into the newest teacher’s classroom (I was the school custodian) to find her quietly crying after getting her first paycheque and confiding that it wouldn’t cover her student loans and rent. Turned out that I made about 25% more than she did, and had no loans or rent to pay. Life is not very fair, sometimes.

Well, a couple of years ago Oklahoma’s teacher of the year quit and moved to Texas and received a $20k increase in salary.
