Better not go to Scandinavian countries, or the Commonwealth countries that seem to think “socialism” works pretty well. BTW: yes, “Democratic Socialism” does require to pay taxes to cover the cost of all those things that are NOT free! The people paid for them over time with those taxes, and saved greatly in such as “out of pocket expenses” for medical care, education, etc… making them much cheaper in the process.

The probability of death and destruction is extremely high. Socialism needs a new name to warn of the coming genocide. They know what happens and they want to do it anyway. There are no jobs. Jobs are destroyed. There is no life. Life is destroyed. People naturally resist the commands of the left when they are free, so they must be reigned in. The promised utopia is in their dreams and has failed time and time again. Maybe in 10 years, we can a get serious, smart Congress if we treat it like WWII.

After a couple of hundred years of Democracy people forget what it took to become free and able to rise according to ability. That is when the “unfairness” of ability, initiative, and productive use of time arises. Those lacking these attributes become resentful and demand access to Other People’s Money. The founders had read up on history and tried to create a structure that would stand the test of time. What we now have unfortunately, is another revolution/transformation arising but unlike the one that created the USA, this one is like the destructive one Robespierre put in motion. With some luck traditional Americans will wake the country up enough to propel the Sanders/Cortez/Democrat Party into the same ash heap of history the Jacobins ended up in with ballots not bullets or guillotines.
