I ran into a family of them in northern Idaho about 45 years ago. The blackberries were ripe & they were in a big patch. They all hid when I rolled up in the car. I went up to the nearest disturbed patch and parted the leaves with a stick ( I was invincible then - and a bit stupid maybe) and a saw a quaking foot, ankle and lower leg covered with course black greasy hair with dirt, leaves and twigs stuck in it. Just as I was about to uncover more, I was hit with the most awful smell & suddenly I was very afraid & close to throwing up. Got in the car Left.
