Usually the “upgrades” are not better; just more confusing. AND aggravating.
Go to your System Preferences and turn off your automatic upgrades. Then the computer will ask you if you want to upgrade first and you can opt out of the upgrade if you want. Unless you are stuck with a PC and Microsoft.
Not an unusual request.
