I enjoyed Liberty Belle in the All-Star Squadron comics, who got her powers from the bell’s legend.

Why is James Knox Polk in this cartoon? Was it because he was president when the Liberty Bell cracked?

The bell cracked from being “clocked”- holding the clapper agaist the reverberating bell, which sets up destructive vibrations. In 1976 Whitchapel Foundry, London, who originally cast the bell, offered to recast it (a common practice in bell restoration) as a gift to help the US to celebrate the Bicentennial, but the offer was declined. IIRC, they had recast it once before in the 1700s.

It’s more of a symbol of our tendency to mythologize random things.

Is it also a weird myth that Davy Crockett (King of the Wild Frontier) patched up the crack in the Liberty Bell? (Of course, it would be an even weirder myth had he “fixed up the government and laws as well”……) If you can’t trust old children’s songs, what can you trust?
