I used to LOVE going to school on my birthday. As a kid, the class would sing Happy Birthday and my mother would bring in cupcakes for the class. When I was older, my friends would make a fuss over me, give me cards and small gifts. What would I do if I stayed home? Watch TV? That would be a punishment!
The first time i ever went to school on my birthday i was 14 years old. Every single year prior to that we had a snow storm that closed the roads and cancelled the buses from the day before my birthday until at least the day after. One year we were snowed in for over a week before i got to go to school again.
At my school the students got the day off for Teacher Institute days. There were four in a school year. More often than not the first one fell on my birthday. It didn’t seem to matter what day of the week it was.
Wish I could have gotten away with that. Can’t even get away with that now. Can’t even take my birthday off and just stay home like I’d like. Oh no, I have to have a “birthday shopping trip” that I’ve said a thousand times I don’t want. But somehow I’m ruining my own birthday because I don’t want to do what others want for MY birthday. When it’s their birthday they do whatever they want and I don’t say a thing because it’s their birthday. But mine I’m not allowed a choice.
Some unexpected coincidences here… Bach and Haydn were both born on March 31 (although as with Beethoven, the date is not entirely certain). Also, Brahms and Tchaikovsky were both born on May 7. The remaining two of the composers mentioned do not share a birthday (Beethoven and Schubert) . Schubert’s birthday, January 31, is nearest to the publication date of this comic.
