Once upon a time and not so long ago, baseball pitchers pitched to contact with the hitters’ bats, relying upon their fielders to make the plays and get the outs. Now, it’s all about striking the batters out while the fielders just stand around waiting for three outs. It makes for very boring – and long – ball games.

40 years ago, I went to a game at Fenway Park here in Boston, and felt like I’d been kidnapped. Then in 1981, it happened again—I was at a boarding school, and had no choice.

I love the way Schulz drew all those teeny little fingers in the early strips.
