Kids: always calculating the odds. Not always accurate but always trying to winkle out a balance of some kind, i.e., if I do ‘this,’ then I’ll get ‘that’. Makes for strong thinkers later on.
Massively stupid observations: “only the flu”, “a simple case of flu”, “just the flu”, “merely influenza”. The great influenza pandemic of 1918-1920 killed an estimated 50-100 million people worldwide, way more than died in all of World War 1 (1914-1918). Modern vaccines make that kind of mortality rate less likely but not impossible. Take flu seriously.
There’s that old joke about getting over a cold, where if you exercise through it, it’ll last a week, but if you rest, you’ll be over it in 7 days. I think it’s supposed to be mildly depressing, but you know, there’s a way to make it encouraging, too.
Other than the part about neither number being at all guaranteed, dependable nor accurate.

I always found swimming made me feel better the rest of the day and seemed to flush a cold in just 3 days. Note: fevers are not the same.
