Macron’s plight illustrates a conundrum: How do political leaders’ introduce policies that will do long-term good for the environment without inflicting extra costs on voters that may damage their chances of re-election?
The “neo-liberal” idea (we have more political flavors in Europe) that everyone pays the same amount is simply unsustainable, because the budget of the poorest is exhausted. That is precisely what the resistance is about. Capitalism makes it impossible to tackle the two biggest problems of our time (poverty and the accompanying turbulence against saving our blue marble and the accompanying turbulence) simultaneously. Macron can’t do much about it either, because he himself is a product of capitalism.
