I’m not in a position to criticize anyone who’s got a tattoo, nor would I be at all inclined to. I have a pretty good-sized one on my right shoulder blade. And I probably shouldn’t question anyone who’s devoted enough to a sports team to get a tattoo related to it. And again, nor would I anyway. Sure, the impulse is there, but like a lot of impulses, it doesn’t hold up well to a lot of introspection.
My own tattoo is not a corporate logo or a college symbol (same thing, anymore, really). Mine is a beautiful (proper respect to artist Tom Renshaw) photorealistic, black-and-gray rendering of the Endurance, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, icebound off Antarctica and listing to its doom, underscored with the text “Fortitudine vincimus.” I wasn’t on the crew of the Endurance and I don’t personally know nor am I related to anyone who ever was, but the story and history behind it mean a lot to me, and I’ve taken the liberty to invest some of my own self and take a good deal of strength from it, which I suppose makes me similar to the kind of sports fan I, uh, sometimes use for material.
I’ve also sported a lot of Sharpie ink on my skin, but none of that was on purpose. Except for, oh, yeah, hundreds of numbers at triathlons and swim events. And those came off without lasers, and the pain took place between the ink going on and the ink coming off and didn’t have anything directly to do with either. Fortitudine vincimus. – “By endurance we conquer” — this is/ was the Shackleton family motto
