Because the people who shouldn’t be in charge fight dirty.

Maybe what we need is someone who fights dirty in the interest of the greater good.

What did Marigold thought the collective noun for her kind was? Oh, I think it was “orns.”

Perhaps because the people who would make good leadership are smart enough not to want such a big responsibility. Meanwhile those who are eager to be in charge are the exact people you really don’t want to have that kind of power…

Because people who should be in charge refuse or are unable to play as dirty as the people who are in charge.

And then there are the competing interests trying to define terms such as “right” and “good.”

Running for office has become so expensive that any candidate has to compromise with the wealthy backers. Therefore, the really good guys don’t want to get sucked in.

I thought “people” was a good catch all term for intelligent individuals whether humans or not. In “Freefall”, Mark Stanley makes it apply to humans, highly intelligent robots and genetically uplifted animals.

If we knew the answer to this we would know a LOT more about what makes humans tick.

I’m probably committing an (informal) logical fallacy or two, but does Marigold’s explanation suggest that John Kasich is actually a unicorn?(Please don’t jump to any conclusions about me or you may be committing a fallacy or two of your own.)

A (true) Fable for Pheobe: Once upon a time, the son of a well-known banking family in our town decided he wanted to make things better. He was a good man, and really wanted to make things good for people. So he got elected to office and went off to Capitol City. No one heard much about him for a while. Then it was time for him to run for office again. But he declared, “I can’t make things better; nobody there in the City wants them better for anyone but themselves.” So he stayed home and did his good from there. And THAT, Phoebe, is why good people don’t run things.

It is hard to run a household. Running a city, running a country. Running the world is impossible.

The people who should be in charge are too honest and too busy taking care of themselves and their loved ones. Even if an honest person manages to get in a position of power, they are soon either corrupted or they quit in disgust. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

And when a good person does gain power, well, Power corrupts. And absolute power corrupts absolutely.
