If you are wondering why the art style suddenly shifted, it is because this particular comic strip is brand new from Lynn Johnston. The original from 1989 implied that Elly and John were hung over after a New Year’s Eve party and maybe that sort of humor does not go over like it did 29 years ago. If you want to see it, here it is:

She’s making New Year’s “Revolutions” because her choices just keep going round and round and round and…

Doing the hangover thing would just be a repeat of an age old cliche, and no longer particularly humorous. Making/discarding new years’ resolution is familiar, but this comes from a young person’s perspective.

Personally, I don’t get the fuzz about the resolutions. Who is going to stick to them? What’s happened to them in March?

This is good one. It’s fun to see Elizabeth struggling to come up some resolutions that she actually would like to keep. (unlike the adults)

They’re easy. I am going to eat and drink more and not do any exercise. I’m sure I won’t break them.

Making resolutions give us a chance to inventory what we are doing right, list what we want to do and identify what we are not going to do in the new year.

and Lizzie is finding them quite revolting…

(Revolving the word “revolutions” around to a different definition.)

howtheduck says this strip is new, not a re-print from the original…if so, that explains why Mike’s hair looks so much better – the half bald front is gone.

The explanation of why the art is different works, but the logic why this one is a substitute for one that would have been dated two days later doesn’t.
