This phenomenon is an extension of something the late, great Mike Royko commented on at the height of the bungee-jumping craze (and of the VHS era): He went one of the several area venues devoted to that, where he watched a young man (probably now approaching – or past – 50) jump; he & his friends then ran to the booth that sold you video of your jump & watched it – then started jumping & down and high-fiving each other. What he had just done wasn’t real for him until he’d seen it on TV.
What does it say about me that I remember when thieves tried to be secretive about their crimes? Oh…that’s right…it says that I’m old. I guess I’m good with that.
