Kaepernick’s taking a knee – something he did in consultation with a veteran to ensure he wasn’t insulting the flag – was to call attention to police killing unarmed black men.

Presumably Breen’s intent here is to show anger by the police at this. I’m not sure where he is going with this: there is clear evidence that a lot of (white) police officers have gotten away literally with murder of unarmed (black) individuals. The many upstanding police officers should be mad about THAT, as it makes them all look bad.

Instead, too many police organizations have instead drawn the “thin blue line” tight to protect themselves, and are trying to demonize the Black Lives Matter movement (coming up with “Blue Lives Matter,” which, given the comparative survival rate, was patently obvious – and that they matter more than black lives). This is unfortunate on many fronts. There ARE a few police chiefs and police officers who are indeed recognizing the problem and are taking action to resolve it, but it hasn’t been generally done. Furthermore, the Republican noise machine has claimed Kaepernick was insulting the troops or the flag, neither of which is true.

So this picture strikes me as poorly conceived: should we emphasize with the police? Nike? Kaepernick?

I can’t remember ever standing for To Anachreon. I must have sometime in my past, childhood maybe. I am always in the band at these events, and it is traditional that musicians sit (probably due to the cello section, although percussionists, except for traps, stand throughout). If you want to tamper with that tradition, then you open up all other traditions as well.
