One thing about reading history is seeing how it ebbs and flows and repeats. Jackson seems so Trumpian (or Trump so Jacksonian). I find it comforting that we’ve been here before and we’re still a country – although there was that nasty Civil War business in between.

I think that Sen. McCain’s passing reminds many of a more civil time where you could be political opponents and still be friends

What is Jackson holding in his hands? Is it some kind of pole (flagpole)? It doesn’t look anything like a shotgun.

That would be a cane. And Brian’s use of it here is a real sign of his research!

Richard Lawrence, an unemployed house painter, approached Jackson as he left a congressional funeral held in the House chamber of the Capitol building and shot at him, but his gun misfired. A furious 67-year-old Jackson confronted his attacker, clubbing Lawrence several times with his walking cane. During the scuffle, Lawrence managed to pull out a second loaded pistol and pulled the trigger, but it also misfired. Jackson’s aides then wrestled Lawrence away from the president, leaving Jackson unharmed but angry and, as it turned out, paranoid.

    5 stars, Brian!
