John is reading Elly really well in this comic strip. He knows there is no way she is going to be sleeping on that couch. While it takes her asking him three times before he figures it out, he does eventually understand that she really wants him to sleep on the couch so she can cough and not feel guilty about it.
John’s a good man to do that. Instead of making his sick wife sleep on the couch, he’s taking one for the team. Hopefully she would do the same for him.
It’s probably in the best interest of someone who has yet to catch a cold or other virus to avoid being in close contact with someone who is literally spraying viruses into the air by coughing or sneezing. You can’t protect yourself from potentially inhaling what is in the air. Also, viruses survive on inanimate objects (like furniture) for a short while, so if one happens to land on your pillow and you put your face on it, you might suffer the consequences. If someone is sick, it’s better to put some distance between them and you. We have antibiotics to fight bacterial infections, but still the only thing around that defends against viruses is a vaccination. Unfortunately for me, I go into allergic shock when I have a flu vaccination…
Lynn is REALLY unafraid to show Elly being gross. It’s almost a poor-self-esteem issue at times, because Lynn herself never looked so doudy in anything I’VE ever seen, nor as fat.
We have an “empty nest” and at least 2 of the empty bedrooms have really good, queen sized mattresses. When I get sick, my husband sleeps in one of those so that I can have our queen and the adjoining bathroom. I have a better chance to shake whatever I have if I sleep in my own bed and he shows his love by sleeping in a spare and trying to stay healthy.
Even the most persistent cough can be controlled with a thick layer of Vicks Vapor Rub on your neck & chest together with a heavy sock pinned around your neck.
Stuff that really happened was fun to write about and comforting to share. When this strip appeared, I got mail from folks who said that what happened in our bedroom, happened in theirs, too.
When we were vaccinated for the flu in the Army in the 50’s, I would get the flu every time!(My mind’s made up don’t confuse me with facts) I told my CO "Look if the US Army needs me to get the flu, I can do it on my own! ;o}
The local pharmacies are pushing the flu shot now, but my doc says to wait about a month (until mid-October) so the protection will last through the flu season. He’s over 80, so he must know what he’s talking about.
I get flu shot every fall. I have asthma so when I get flu, I could barely breathe which is dangerous. These flu shots are a blessing because I don’t have to deal with the symptoms which are maybe 3 times worse than people without asthma. I do get occasional stuffy nose and mild coughs which are colds – these shots only give you immunization against flu, not good old colds.
Gastric reflux and other issues can make you cough a lot. I broke a rib a day after Labour Day in the early morning from my frequent hard coughing. Not much fun. Just saying.
It was so sweet of John to not make a big deal about it. However, who are you kidding? Elly had no intention of sleeping on that couch. If it were me, I’d ask him first then after the first response and if the coughing doesn’t stop, I just go.

It’s only logical. The sick spouse gets the bed. If other sleeping arrangements are required, then it is the healthy spouse who should make them.

I have never felt ill from the vaccination. But I have had influenza and it is God Awful.
