Reminds me of a story that Oliver North told about a gunny who had a unique approach to waking up people who were asleep on the perimeter…he would urinate in his foxhole. When the guy woke up, the gunny would ask if the guy were awake and if the guy would say “yes”, he would ask him “Would a guy who’s awake let another guy p—s on him?” And if the guy would say “no” to that question, the gunny would respond. "That’s right, So either I didn’t p—s on you, or else you were sleeping. If you were, I’ll have you court-martialed and you’ll spend six months in the brig. Now, then did i p—s on you? " And the soldier would say “I guess not, Gunny.”
If those are the consequences for falling asleep on the job, people will prefer to steal for a living. It leads to the same consequence, but at least that one will be more justified.
I thought that the Romans when they caught a sentry asleep. They would be nice and let the poor fellow sleep a few night out side the encampment. Also without any legionnaires guarding him throughout the night too. Since falling asleep at his post was letting his fellow legionnaires sleep unguarded.
I wonder how often when someone was hung upside down, they got exhausted. Then the blood rushed to their head and their brain exploded. Wouldn’t that have happened while the guard was sleeping and he never would have woke up?
