To all those of you who are hitting the pride button, just what have you personally done to justify that pride other than having the “intelligence” to choose to be born here?
I am not proud to be an American. This country has arguably done more harm than good, overtly (how’d that “regime change” thing work out?) and implictly (How many monsters around the world drew inspiration from the worst of what America has to offer).
I am proud of many Americans – who rise above and thrive despite the roadblocks thrown in their way by a system that is supposed to provide opportunity to all. (A system currently being run by a man born on third base, who likes to brag about all the triples he hits).
And when the inevitable flood of “Why don’t you leave then” posts arrive, most of them will be free of why I should be proud. Or will mention things that happened before I (or they) was born. #Resist
Trump was proud enough to fake bone spurs for deferments, yet engage in sports afterwards, then later verbally assault a Gold Star family’s sacrifices.
We are proud that we live in a country where folks like Mike Lester can ridicule and intimidate people who think differently than he does. Heck, we can even be proud of him when he does it. Bless his heart.
My post was to prod people into thinking about why they should be proud. Looks like it worked. There are reasons to be proud, but just being born here isn’t one of those reasons. I am proud when we live up to our ideals and ashamed when we don’t.

Mike Lester’s graphic representation of the difference between Patriotism and Nationalism.
Patriotism, I can be proud of my country and still able to recognize when it is wrong.
Nationalism, I’m so proud of my country I don’t give a damn WHAT it does. Even when it does it to ME!

I’m proud to be an American. What I’m not proud of is the rest of the world laughing at us because we elected such a twit.
