    It was John Adams, not Franklin who promoted fireworks to celebrate the 4th. I’m sure Ben would have liked the show, but he was in France from 1776 until 1785. By which time the custom of Fireworks on the Fourth was well established.

    In the words of a founding father…The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.
