Nothing is wasted, it just hasn’t been recovered yet.

I have to agree. I’ve never understood why people throw their money away into fountains.

I threw a penny in the fountain at the mall and wished I had it back. Then I found a dollar in the parking lot and gave it to a homeless man. Ah, the randomness of life!

Beats going home to crab at kids to stay off one’s crabgrass.

When I was a kid I remember watching tourists throw coins into the shallow pond in front of the British Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal and wondering what happened to the coins afterward.

I don’t know if it’s still true or not, but some years ago, I looked up how much collector value my old silver 50 cent pieces were worth. It turns out, the melt value was higher than either the face value or the collector value!

This seems to be a good site to determine the melt value of coins. In some cases the melt value does exceed the collector value but there are a lot a variables to consider In almost every case the melt value far exceeds the face value and is why they switched to cheaper metals.

Saw something on Modern Marvels about coins. They showed a guy who operates a business cleaning fountain coins.
