An Uber backup driver believes a car to be self-driving and watches videos instead of the road and kills an innocent victim.

“Small government” TrumpubliCONs believe government should be “self-driving” and that public policy should “get off the backs” of Wall $treet bank$ters and corporate thugs so they can let the few richest elites “kill” workers, consumers and our shared environment and infrastructure (they hate government for exactly the same reason criminals hate police — use a gun, rob a bank; use a bank, rob the nation).

But they do want Big Intrusive Government to micro-manage YOUR personal life — including private relationships (dictate who you can or can’t marry), private medical choices (reproductive choices, medical marijuana, end of life choices, stem cell therapies) or try to force religion (private) into the public square or subsidize it with special tax giveaways (socialized religion).

Self-driving cars, self-cooking kitchens, self-raised children (just turn on the computer and let it run). Pretty soon humans are gonna be like those folk on the space ship in WALL-E.

An iconic image for our almost infinitely distracted age of Munch’s “The Scream.”

The manufactures of these systems are getting way ahead of themselves. They KNOW the AI isn’t ready for prime time but they are real world testing anyway.

I have a suspicion that at some point in the near future there will be a Ford Pinto type scandal in which it is revealed that the designers placed profit ahead of safety.

Time to emulate that ever resourceful Wile E. Coyote; “Back to the drawing board.” But what frightens me is that self-driving cars may get the same sort of support given to trickle-down economics; e.g., “It doesn’t work in the real world, but the principle is sound.”
