So what you are saying is that Trump cannot think of anything on his own and has to depend on the Democrats for ideas.

So why didn’t you quote the words Trump actually said to characterize Mexicans? “They’re bringing drugs, They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. Mexico is our enemy. Mexico’s legal and court system is corrupt. The border is wide open for cartels and terrorists.” I too would not want to associate myself with such ignorant and outrageous allegations.

I don’t think anyone would think that Trump made any of those statements. They were straight forward, reasonable and didn’t contain a subtext of hate. Treating the “illegal aliens” with contempt and hatred is the problem. These are not “bad people”, they are desperate people worthy of respect and compassion. At the same time, letting people “pour into the US undocumented” is a bad idea.

and none of those people advocated, supported or separtated families unless the parents were deemed unfit. You know better than your cartoon depicts Mr. Lester.

The simple fact is that all of those things are true and legitimate. The other fact is that not one of the people quoted (to the best of my admittedly limited knowledge) ever took any of the necessary steps to legally correct the situation, which in turn led to the debacle we have just witnessed.

Once again: If you want fewer illegals, prosecute the businesses that hire them.

If you want fewer ‘legals’ taking jobs, eliminate, or severely curtail, H-1 visas. Of course, the downside is that Mar-a-lago might have to hire more Americans.

But people who arrive at our border and turn themselves in seeking asylum, aren’t they APPLYING for legal paperwork? At what point do they become criminals, Mike? You do understand that if they are in fact criminals that we still have to give them due process. Which means a chance at bail, a lawyer, respect for their civil rights which OUR Constitution grants them?

Your attempt at deflection and kick at the media both ignore the real problem.

And not once do you see them advocating separating parents; imprisoning children; and traumatizing parents and children. That’s a Republican idea.

    Heya Mr. Lester.

A neat thing happened yesterday. I was at a teacher PD session on how to use music and art in the classroom to engage students and guess who’s book was used to demonstrate the method, why yes indeed, Mike Lester’s “Cool Daddy Rat”. I thought, man, I am going to have to make sure I tell Mike what a good job he (and Kristyn) did. They even gave a copy away as a door prize. I didn’t win, so I’ll have to buy my own copy on Amazon.

And, as long as we’re talking about kids, how about you do an op-ed cartoon on the effect Mr. Trump’s policy is having on all those children locked up at the border? I know you prefer to focus on the media, (it’s much safer, I’m sure) but I thought I’d ask.

    Cheers.

Speaking from the left, I actually agree with all four of these statements. “We simply cannot allow people to pour into the US undocumented.” I agree. But that doesn’t justify taking young children away from their parents. “People who enter the US without our permission are illegal aliens.” Well, duh. That’s sort of the definition. "Just because your child gets across the border doesn’t mean the child gets to stay.” I agree. There should be a humane process to decide which children can stay and which can be sent back safely. “It is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation to permit abuse of our immigration laws.” I agree. Now we need a sensible and humane set of immigration laws. Neither party has been able to solve the problem, and what Trump is doing is only making things worse.

    “Who were the REAL creeps?”

Trump implemented a horrible policy that took children from their parents, injcluding children that are so young they are sent to “tender care” facilities. Trump lied to blame it on the Dems.

Sessions misquoted the Bible so badly his church considered throwing him out.

Melania’s jacket said “I really don’t care, do you?”.

Hypocrisy from the left on this topic is neck deep.

Kinda puts a lie to the administration’s (and, specifically Trump’s) claim that the Democrats don’t care about illegal immigration and want completely open borders, don’t you think? Thanks for providing more evidence of the lies of the Trump administration!

Addressing a few of your questions at once:-Brookings documents the invasion of CHILDREN to the U.S. border. So does NPR. The separation of children from parents most certainly happened at our border under Obama and Trump but it pales in comparison to the separation taking place in Central America where parents put their kids on a LA RAZA or other illegal immigration sponsor train or bus w/ a phone number in their pocket (see NPR MORNING EDITION yesterday).

-Central American nations including Mexico have no social safety net like Canada. The U.S. (you Mr. Taxpayer) is/are their social safety net.

-The opportunity for child abuse, sex trafficking is extraordinarily high and underreported. fyi: the legal age of consent in Mexico is 12. Read that again -twelve. Look it up.

-imo we should make investment incentives for American biz’s to go to Central America. Incredibly dangerous regions and risky but relocating people to America is going to deflate wages of the very Americans who can withstand it least: U.S. minorities. And if you don’t like that idea then let’s just invade militarily wipe out the bad guys and say hello to the 51st state.

-I don’t know who let the FLOTUS get on a plane to South Texas wearing that green jacket but they should be fired. Incredibly tone deaf. No excuse. She should apologize.

-Trump became Obama Wed. No difference on immigration but guess who’s still not happy? Dems and media which tells you this is all about open borders.

-This is an invasion and no less an attempt to alter the culture and political balance of the U.S. by hispanic advocacy groups and democrats. It’s a democratic voter drive. If you were going to take over a the most powerful country in the world would you do it w/ guns or w/ children?

-The Pulitzer committee hasn’t given a true conservative the PP in 50 years. Look it up. Liberals run the American news media and take turns giving ea. other long slow wet deep kisses.

Trump’s current policy of indefinite detention is not the same as Obama’s, which I recall Trump describing as “catch & release”. Mind you, Obama was forced by the courts to take that policy. Turns out that with a little help, 99% of asylum seekers with children actually keep up with the court hearings, though.

Doing what we can to help bring stability & prosperity to Central America seems like a great idea. Going in militarily to wipe out the “bad guys” is what caused the current situation. And of course, making a “51st State” would make them American citizens, which I believe is what Trump’s base is terrified of.

ANDYLIT and LESTER, the quotations do not equate to a “zero-tolerance” policy that separated children from their families as a rule (not an exception). Sessions (sick creep) was grinning while poorly quoting the Bible; his church even admonished him about this (they should throw him out IMO). The jacket from Melania was in very poor taste and the explanation that it was directed to the press is just plain stupid. Fill in the blank “I really don’t care (about BLANK), do you?” Media doesn’t work, tell me what is supposed to be the answer.

Nance, if we used your logic, an axe murderer who was caught with his kid in the car would be detained with the kid in his cell. Or, we would just issue a citation and let him go because he had his kid with him.

When you arrest a person and detain them, you don’t put the kid in the clink with him. You separate the child and attempt to find family. If you can’t find family, the kid goes to an institution while a broader search is initiated.

Complicating factor is that in this case, the kid is an illegal alien.

Andylit, if we used your logic, an asylum seeker should be treated the same way as an axe murderer.
