You forgot the flag of Trumpistan. 13 alternating stripes of White and Whiter , with a field of 50 Dollar signs, edged in chintzy gold leaf!

To honor Flag Day, let’s remember the rules of flag usage, at least when people used to care:

The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal. The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyardThe flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations. The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind. The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

Robert Peary was a lover of the American flag, and was determined to post as many as possible as far north as possible. My personal favorite was the “Peace Flag”. Let’s pray that it is more than symbolism.

If my father were still alive…. today would be his 93rd birthday. My Dad loved the idea that he was born on Flag Day along with some famous other people. We always displayed the flag on our homes and we celebrated Flag Day doubly as the flags birthday and as my dad’s birthday.. great times great food great memories.

Back in 1989, during the flag-burning hysteria, when my favorite justice even pulled Scalia in the majority (and I can explain why), I went home on Independence Day. It was raining, and so many flags were out in the rain. Even our governor, Bob Casey got into the act over the hysteria. (Who even knows what the Pennsylvania flag looks like, let alone burn it!?) Yet, ordinary citizens left their flags out in the rain!

At my apartment, every day is Flag Day. I display the flag, given to me by the USO in thanks for my support of their programs, on a daily basis in front of my apartment. I have it non-permanently attached to my front window frame with red, white and blue binder clips and display it vertically as the U.S. Flag Code specifies (blue field to the left). It’s been out there every day for more than three years, and not one word of complaint from neighbors or the management.

I take pride in the display.

I like to think I am as patriotic as the next guy, but once you raise the status of the flag – which I and my students pledge to every day – to something past icon status – it starts to make me uncomfortable. The flag can give me goosebumps at times, but it only has the reverence we give it; once we start forming opinions about people because of how they interpret the flag, that’s when trouble starts.
