In “A Christmas Story,” Mrs. Parker used LifeBuoy soap to wash out Ralphie’s mouth after he dropped an “F bomb.” Ralphie later imagines being blind in his adult life due to “soap poisoning.” The 1950’s formulation of LifeBuoy included carbolic acid (gave it that bright coral color.)
And, also speaking from personal experience, it was always a case of, “in addition to” and never a case of, “instead of!” so the young lady in the cartoon is doomed to disappointment, I fear.

And the expression “Rule of Thumb” comes from the old law that you could not beat your wife with a stick larger around than your thumb!
