In 1989, Tina Turner was a recent reference. Olive Oyl not so much. I expect Olive Oyl is more for us comic strip fans than for the 20-something hair stylist.

Well, hairdresser, you left Elly under the lamp a bit too long and used too-small rollers. Body perm use the largest rollers and the shortest time under the lamp. Go back to beauty school.

Really Elly, you trusted someone whose hair looked like that? I’d have stuck with the 1/4 inch off the back.

Did I call it, or did I call it? I’ve yet to see a perm represented positively in any movie, book, comic, or otherwise.

Except maybe for the Amy Schumer skit that involved a “bad perm gone right”. Maybe this link will work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCMEPtp3uls

Reminds me of Alice from Dilbert. Will she punch the hairdresser out?

I see I’m in the minority, but I like Elly’s “new look”.

    Lynn’s Notes:

Having done this to Elly’s hair, I was now bound to have her “curly” for a long time! If I was to do a realistic story, I had to have a realistic outcome.

So Bluto was rude to Elly, but John punched out Bluto and won Elly’s heart?

I’ve had this happen to me, and it’s NOT fun when you expect something softer.

Well, the upside of this perm is that you don’t have to comb it out thoroughly, just let the rake comb through it a few times to lift up the mop and then shake it out…

My poor grandma spent a lot of money for a perm for me many years ago, only to have it not work at all…first time I washed my hair it was gone. Just little balls of hair on my ends. So she cut them off and a perm was never attempted again LOL

I had one of those, she turned me away from the mirror, cut the back up to the nape of my neck, and proceeded to give me the tightest perm ever given. I just stared at the mirror in shock. What to do? Down to my shoulders in front, up ALL the way in the back, like a reverse mullet! Took months to grow out, Never got my hair “done” again. Now I cut it myself.

Rolling up long hair on those rods takes a very long time. Hair as long as Elly’s also may not take as tight all over as Elly is shown here. The hair strand is so long, that by the time it’s rolled to the scalp, the outer layer of hair will be looser at the head and tighter at the tips because of all the winding layers. Also, the saturation of the perm solution, and the necessary neutralizer to finish it and set the curls, cannot penetrate those layers all the way through. That is why spiral rods were invented for long hair perms. OK….more than you wanted to know…. ; )

Some things are timeless. That haircut is definitely not one of them. A period piece if there ever was one.

Oh gosh, a variation of this happened to me in my early 30’s. I wanted a spiral curl (my hair is very straight, naturally) which was the rage back in the mid to late 1980’s. My hair was quite long, they were so fashionable and I spent $50 to get it done…a lot back then. Instead, I wound up looking an AWFUL lot like Ellie, frizzy was the word, it was terrible. It took a long time to cut that disaster out of my hair, and I’ve never had a perm since….and you can bet, at my age now, I never will again! Yikes, the biggest hair disaster for me, ever! Interestingly, I have a daughter who has beautiful, curly hair, (she inherited them from her dad’s side, not mine) and HER hair does the spiral curls naturally right out of the shower. I’ve always envied her natural curls, and she’s always envied my staight hair. LOL
