$5 per meal. Does that include delivery to those in need, or even just to Puerto Rico? If so, I doubt that a “meal” could include more than a single donut.
If Trump’s plans for the SNAP program works out the way he wants it to, you can be sure it won’t cost $5 a meal. He would never spend that much on a poor person. Nope it’ll be out of date canned goods and lots and lots of Top Ramen….And a roll of paper towels each. Shouldn’t cost the government more than a buck a meal. By slashing and eliminating all welfare support services and programs he’ll find a few more bucks to give to the rich Elite 1%.
Oh, please. If it truly was Trump’s idea, then he either intends to give the contract to one of his own companies or a company he owns stock in. If it was another Republican’s idea, then the contract will go to a military contractor such as Halliburton.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides food to millions of poor Americans by way of an E.B.T. card which you use like a credit card when you check out at your local Supermarket or convenience store. Because of this functionality many, many local businesses across the United States benefitted!
With it’s usual lack of forethought, the Trump Administration has floated a plan where the people receiving assistance would get something called a “Harvest Box” containing commestibles in lieu of “part” of the financial assistance they’d normally receive – in other words, the government would decide WHAT the poor got to eat!
Growing up in the ’50’s I was exposed to the idea of “commodities” (as they were called then) when I accompanied my maternal grandmother periodically to the local “Sale Barn” to collect such things as cheese, rice, oatmeal, beans, powdered milk and canned meat – all plainly marked as U.S.D.A. Surplus. I know where THAT food came from because the federal government had scores of warehouses holding the surplus production of foodstuffs by the nation’s farmers and ranchers which the federal government bought from them to provide a support base for the production of the same – that surplus doesn’t exist anymore – we simply pay farmers not to produce, so I have no idea where Donnie thinks we’re going to get the foodstuffs to fill those “Harvest Boxes” – and I suspect they have no clue, themselves – they just want to reduce the amount of money going from government coffers to the poor!

Initially this gave me a chuckle. But then upon further reflection, I sadly pictured this actually taking place.

It’s not as if, Trump’s FEMA just picked a name out of the phone directory, but probably gave it to a friend. That’s the scandal.
