A full lunar month, or “moon”, goes from “new moon” to “new moon” (completely dark phases where the face we see is not illuminated at all). The “first quarter” is the when half the moon’s face is illuminated, “second quarter” is when the whole moon’s face is illuminated (full moon), “third quarter” is when half the moon’s face is illuminated again. These mark the quarter-lunar-month points, so “quarter-moon” in this case means quarter-month.
I had a witty comment in mind, but I don’t want to offend janitors, the unsung heroes of every school. In my school days I viewed them as more important than the principal and teachers.
The next question is, in exactly which way is Frazz confused? Is it the quarter moon that’s inaccurately named, or the full moon? Logic says that the quarter moon is the one named correctly, even if you forget the official correct answer, that it’s 25% of the way through its cycle.
But when you can see a semicircle, you’re seeing half of the half of the moon that’s facing you. There’s a whole ‘nother side of the moon we’re forgetting about. Just ask Pink Floyd. I suppose it’s the full moon that should be named the half moon. Though I won’t be taking part. I’ve been saying “God, I just love the full moon” long enough I’m not going to change because of some cartoonist’s blog. Not even when I’m the cartoonist.
Have a great Christmas, everyone. And I mean that fully.

Why is Frazz thinking of the moon when it set hours earlier? Typically our minds chase these squirrels when we see or hear something that makes us think of them.
My mom was an attendance clerk, vice-principal’s secretary, and unofficial counselor at middle and high schools back in the days when teachers had some control options regarding rowdy students. Also known as “some kids left behind”…
She used to say the 2 people you never want to cross are the principal’s secretary (the principal?—meh) and the head custodian (she never called him a janitor).
Being outside before Civil Twilight on Xmas day is, for me, the most magical time of the year. Not to mention all the stores quit playing that Xmas music. Especially The Little Drummer Boy

It’s also a quarter moon because we can’t see the back half.

Because it’s one-fourth of the moon cycle Frazz. You spent three miles on that?

A full moon is a full half-side of the whole moon!

We call it a “Quarter Moon” because “Two-Bit Moon” would be weird.
