    As a child it was my job to take a bucket of ashes down to the basement, dump them in the trash and haul up a bucket of coal for the stove that heated our house. This was 1950’s Brooklyn, not 1870’s Little House on the Prairie.

    When I got to England in 1992, the place I stayed was on a farm. What they used to heat the house was coal.
