Like most guys, I have been known to be a bit obtuse, at times, about those type of things.
Now, whether it was deliberate, or inadvertent, is a matter of conjecture.

Subtle doesn’t work on some guys!
It COULD be deflection on the part of two guys who aren’t interested in listening to less-than-subtle hints about a marriage proposal.
Both guys are just “yanking her chain” a little. They know what she means.
The pony will end up being WAY more expensive than the ring she is so subtly suggesting.
