While I agree with the premise, I have to suggest the addition of at least ‘a civilization too late.’ This did not begin with us, but it has existed so long it seems to be embedded in human genetic makeup. It’s the you can’t build a civilization without war philosophy, A pitiful defense for ‘brawn vs brains.’
all of nature is built on Survival of the Fittest. Even plants fight over a spot in the sun their share of soil. Is it any wonder that humans also fight for resources, even though we have ways of building enough abundance that we often we have more than enough to share?
Of course, that was the whole point of the Nov 11 observance – it was originally “Armistice Day”, and it was meant to mark the end of the War to End All Wars, so indeed they thought there would be no more veterans in the future. The holiday was changed to “Veterans’ Day” only after that turned out not to be the case. My grandmother, whose brothers served in Europe in WWI, always referred to Nov 11 as “Armistice Day”, out of habit.
Ever notice that we all remember 9/11, the original Armistice Day was 11/11, and there’s a chain of convenience stores named 7/11, but nobody ever gives a rip about 5/11? Odd, right?
Veterans and active military personnel fit into the same category as first responders, lawyers, medical teams, insurers and the guy at the pet-supplies store who knows exactly which detergent gets the skunk smell off the dog. You’d really rather they were never a necessity in your life, but since you know they’re going to be, it’s good to have the best.Frazz by Jef Mallett for Nov 11, 2017 | GoComics.com

Veterans Day: when mail carriers, DMV clerks and teachers have the day off, but if you’re only a veteran you have to go to work.
