I don’t know what it’s gonna take before Houston, and Texas, figures out that whole water goes down thing. You got a house, better make sure its on a hill, a big one. Surely with the lax zoning down there you could just scrape up a lot of dirt, oh, possibly in line to the nearest body of water, and make a nice base for your house. You know, like drainage.
Maybe we should stop voting for politicians who relax regulations that make it easier to pollute. Maybe we should vote for politicians who fund Emergency programs and are interested in the infrastructure of our great American cities.
The only people who belong in a flood plain and low coastal waters are farmers and those whose businesses depend on them. Instead we have people setting up house and buying federal subsidized flood insurance paid for by American taxpayers. Then we allow them to build again on the same spot only to wait for the next disaster so they can bilk us again. Don’t get me wrong I do feel empathy for the survivors and have contributed to their cause but, when will we ever learn to plan these areas better to make them more sustainable or survivable?
Expect a LOT more of this. Flood plains or no, some 80% of American cities are built near water for very practical reasons. Where there is water and extreme weather, flooding can occur. We are getting increasingly extreme weather — not just more hurricanes, but the ordinary variance in weather is increasing.
They’re now calling Harvey a 1000 year flood. This is misleading and a huge disservice to people living along the coasts and/or in hurricane country. It used to be a thousand year disaster, it’s now becoming the norm. It’s well past time to take climate change seriously.
If only those people would have sent Joel more money. Then the prosperity gospel would have provided TX with good fortune. Must be a lot of sinners there.
You can try bending or breaking the laws of nature, but it hasn’t worked yet. How about laws and regulations based on scientific reality instead of political ideology?
Okay Daddy,. Explain why the president just cancelled regulations that would help fix things this time around. And those regulations would have helped fix things next time around after the next hurricane which might be soonest if Irma builds up enough strength to hit you in the near future.

When I was in the Army back in the 80’s I kept an Airstream on the beach in North Carolina for surf fishing on my down time. While on assignment in N. Africa two hurricanes came up the coast one year and I called my uncle to check that it was secure. He said it looked great and very seaworthy as it was about a mile out to sea when he checked. I didn’t care because it was just things. Would I have raised a family there? Hell no!

You might get to see #4 soon if Irma keeps building intensity.

“100 year flood” means that under the conditions known, the odds of having that flood that year were one in 100.
It would seem possible that the odds stated are missing some bit of data. Maybe the government told them they could no longer consider it.
