It isn’t the game that turns me off. It’s the fact that it IS just a sport, and it’s treated like a religion.

One of the main reasons our school starts earlier and earlier in August is that coaches want football practice to start earlier.

If I want to get on people’s nerves to the tune of about 20 percent of the population, I can talk about how much I like triathlon, or any of its components, or really any other endurance sport.

If I want to get on the nerves of more like 90 percent of the population, I can talk about how I dislike football. Even if you allow that half the population is about as interested as I am in what people don’t like, that’s a substantial imbalance.

I can understand why, if I did like football, more people would be willing to hear me go on positively about football as opposed to endurance sports: There’s the reasonable expectation that, in my enthusiasm, I might invite someone to go for a run with me, and no threat at all that I’d invite them to play that special American-youth kind of Russian roulette where you see if sudden orthopedic trauma happens soon enough to prevent progressive cerebral trauma. Endurance sports are something you do; football is something other people do FOR you so you can wear clothing that sort of matches theirs. Oops. That was sort of a rant or two I wandered into there.

Anyway, the idea was to continue to ponder why people get so offended when I say I don’t care for football, but I think I just figured it out.

I love pumpkin pie! Love autumn too, it has most of the warmth of summer without the stifling heat and humidity.

Pumpkin spice lattes, etc., actually DO often contain a small amount of pureed pumpkin… since 2015 or so.
