Thanks to Piotr Tschaikovkski, we have the 1812 Overture, which is a fabulous homage to not 1 but 2 great national anthems.
One of the many sins laid at the feet of the late unlamented Soviet Union is that they denied the Russian people access to their great composer because the triumphant strains at overture’s end, rising over the cannonade, had been used by the czars, whom the Communists despised.
The anthem is Arise, children of the FatherlandOur day of glory has arrivedAgainst us the bloody flag of tyrannyis raised; the bloody flag is raised.Do you hear, in the countrysideThe roar of those ferocious soldiers?They’re coming right into your armsTo cut the throats of your sons, your comrades!

Insult France if you want. But if not for them, we wouldn’t have just held a Presidential election. Instead, we’d be saying “God save the Queen!”
(Actually, considering what happened last week, maybe we should be insulting France.)
