It’s a holiday for the men. Normally (I know not always but more often than not) the women do all the work while the men watch TV, eat their fill and enjoy all the time off from work.
So. I guess it just escapes everyone that “holidays” is just a cultural shortening of Holy Days? We are steadily losing our language and our culture because no one gives a damn anymore. Use it and abuse it until it’s obscured by ignorance.I’m not an English teacher, nor am I a writer. I’m just a guy who appreciates the history and provenance of this great melting-pot language we have. It’s made up of little pieces of everywhere, and we change it to suit our needs, but we also need to remember from whence we came. It’s a pet peeve of mine to have people whose job is words, like Writers, TV News Readers (they “report” anything anymore, and they are mere entertainers, as far as I can see.), and others don’t take the effort to hone their craft. Words are your JOB! Learn how to use them properly!
