Unenforced laws should either be enforced or removed. The 20 MPH zone near my home and the no texting while driving signs are equally useless. The politicians in my state keep cutting the size to the police department – neoliberal policy, no new taxes — so it is mathematically impossible to enforce laws.
Chicago is anything but a gun free zone. A local set of gun regulations won’t work when a short drive away you can buy anything you want without even a background check. Something like 60% of gun transfers in the US are done without any kind of check. Texas is a right to carry state, you can see how well that works. That said, the real problem is when areas like the Harrison police district in Chicago where poverty, bad schools, very high unemployment exist, gangs run rampant and violence is the norm. Until we start to unwind these conditions, more guns just means more violence.
The “shining city on a hill” seems to be erupting in gunfire. Virtually every day people are taking to guns to handle their own personal issue. A culture of gun worship and lack of political will to implement controls seems to be central to the problem..The U.S. is nowhere to be found in the recent top 10 safest countries in the world. Iceland is ranked highest, a country with low gun ownership, in fact they do not even have a military. Those that made the list are those with low gun ownership combined with common sense gun laws. Generally, they are northern European countries, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and some Asian countries such as Japan. Canada is culturally similar to the U.S. in many respects, having fairly high gun ownership, but with stronger gun laws and without the obsession of personal ownership of guns. .The U.S. model is not working. They might look to safe countries in the world for the way forward. Change won’t happen quickly, but “a long journey starts with a small step.”
You have a right to carry a gun. Law enforcement personnel have a right to shoot you if you make any move that they think is toward that gun. In stand your ground states so does anyone else. Let’s all just meet on Main Street at high noon.
So the answer is flood the city with guns? Should we all be issued a gun at birth.. isn’t that what “God given right” is? That God is giving us our guns. Would more pistols help, or AR-15s? Do we hand them out based on race or should there be a list of some kind? Should terrorist get guns too? How about Christian terrorists? What about “gangsters” Should the poor be allowed guns?I don’t see how your gun utopia works, we have already seen a good-guy with a gun is no answer to a bad guy with a gun.
