I’ve been called twice for criminal court. But since my husband is a local police chief, and I know the DA, the judges, and most of the investigators, I got dismissed both times.
I lived in Colorado Springs for 10 years, 9 of which I was officially a resident (the first year I was still in service and officially lived elsewhere), and I never once got a jury summons. I moved to Grand Junction and in the 15 years I lived there I was summoned all of three or four times and never once had to actually serve (though I did come really close once). Grand Junction was also my home of record while I was in the service (for 21+ years) and I only got two or three summons in all that time and I got out of those because of my service obligation. I’ve just moved again and it will be interesting to see how often I get called on here. So far, for me anyway, jury duty has not been an arduous task, we’ll see what happens next.
And that will get you excused. The last time I was called it had to do with a bad medical device that caused deaths and other complications. After some preliminaries we were allowed to petition the judge for reasons to be excused. Everyone who had a sick relative or could not leave their jobs were let go. I told the judge that I could not be sure of my impartiality because I was an oncologist and did my fair share of cutting out tumors. The judge made me stay. The first 12 jurors were called up and the attorneys questioned them and excused 6 of those first twelve. I was in the next group and when one of the attorneys questioned me I told her that I had read about the device and in fact was an MD and such. She dismissed me before I had a chance to sit down. I was done for the day after waiting around for 3 hours. Half of which was after the judge told me to stay. I gave the judge a look such that he would have left the court in a handbasket. And I did not vote for him in the next election. Stupid judge.

What Gray should have said is: “I watch a lot of Perry Mason”.
