Mismatched problem/solution: with the ax, he didn’t need the ladder, but lost future crops. With the ladder, he didn’t need the axe, and would have had future crop. Sounds like a Trumpist.
B.C. is known for occasional social commentary, so how do you know this wasn’t about politics?I’m not a Trump fan, but thought this was a subtle attack on socialism, not so much on him. (Although depending on what he actually does, it could apply to him.) Penalize the rich (job producers) and eventually, there won’t be any rich who produce jobs. As Margaret Thatcher pointed out: “The problem with socialism, eventually you run out of other people’s money”
Freud would probably mention something about their relationship with their fathers, and how they want a strong authority figure, but prefer it to be nurturing and feminine, like Bill Clinton said his mom was when looking for a way out of scrutiny.
As opposed to being political, this is more a commentary on the arrogance of mankind in general, in terms of believing that we’re superior because we’re a thinking animal. Interesting that this should come from what used to be a somewhat religious strip, since according to the mythology of Genesis we were given dominion over the world and everything in it. I don’t know if the strip is suggesting that we aren’t doing a great job or (less likely) that God made a mistake putting us in charge.
Or maybe it’s just a silly, one-shot gag with no significance behind it at all.
