Potential professional musicians hear that line all the time: playing music is a nice hobby, but what do they intend to do for a living?

Well, it doesn’t hurt to have a plan B.

Being a professional musician is like being an actor or a writer; in proportion to those who can actually live well from it, the majority have to work two jobs. At least.

Practicing Cole Porter might be a more lucrative career choice.

I remember one strip when Lucy asks Schroeder about all the other composers, and he replies that they were great, too.

My favorite Schroeder comic was when Charlie Brown noticed that the black keys were just painted on. He asked Schroeder how he could play all of those complicated pieces and Schroeder said “Practice.”

I thought I’d read that Schroeder represented Schulz’s frustrations at his work being regarded as ‘only’ a comic – this certainly looks like something he’d encountered.

If society doesn’t have room for art, for arts sake, then it isn’t much of a society. In my humble opinion.

All the more impressive when you consider that The Musical Offering is mostly written for small ensembles or organ.

If you’re gong to do it as a living, you might want to learn to read sheet music. Imagine how successful Paul McCartney might have been if he had known how to do that.

Bach wrote music, but the music never wrote Bach.

Familiar scene in Peanuts with unfamiliar components. Charlie leaning against the piano, not Lucy. The piano facing the other way. Bach, not Ludwig Van. Ahhh, Bach.
