Val: Isn't this GREAT?! Caravaning down the open road at dawn...
Val: Cool air...no traffic...
Val: And if you leave EARLY ENOUGH...blissful peace and QUIET.
Alix: Z!

I’ve heard that’s the best way to do it, but we’re so not morning people that I haven’t been able to convince him to get up in the dark and go. My oldest won’t sleep in the car anyway, no matter how tired she is.
Military brat childhood; pack back of station wagon but left it flat and covered it with a couple of blankets. At “O Dark 30” put my brother & me in the back to sleep for a couple more hours snuggled to the freshly washed dog. Drive 100+ miles before breakfast, drive 300+ miles before lunch, stop at a motel with pool at about 4pm after another 200+ miles, let kids wear themselves out in the pool. Rinse and repeat until you cross the continent! (yes we did stop to let the dog do her business)
My Mom used to toss us into the back of similar station wagon in central PA in our pj’s, drive to NYC for a day at the Museum of Natural History, lunch at the Automat, walk through Central Park, and home the same night. Ah, the good ole days!
You all must be my age. We padded the station wagon back area with foam mattress, left home at bedtime, stopped when boys woke up for breakfast, and at our destination by lunch. Husband slept rest of day, but, boy, was that a peaceful way to travel. Car top carrier had all the junk. Hooray for station wagons!
Least it’s quite. Our family never did that. When we took trips during day time but then I would get sleepy and fall asleep in car so it was still quite.
when we travel abroad, (to Europe anyway, America’s different) we normally have to wake up about 4 AM to catch a flight at 7. Convenient morning flight times my a**

That’s how my mom always did long trips – leave at 5 a.m., and stop for breakfast 3 hours later. Good on you, Val!
