I used to imagine that dead people were aware that they were in a box buried in the ground, but had to lay there for eternity in some kind of enforced nap.
With some myths there is more than one soul or parts of souls and if one part lingers too long you can have a deadly evil spirit that can hurt the living. Chindi.
