Myth #5: Keeping a gun at home makes you safer.Fact-check: Owning a gun has been linked to higher risks of homicide, suicide, and accidental death by gun.• For every time a gun is used in self-defense in the home, there are 7 assaults or murders, 11 suicide attempts, and 4 accidents involving guns in or around a home.• 43% of homes with guns and kids have at least one unlocked firearm.• In one experiment, one third of 8-to-12-year-old boys who found a handgun pulled the trigger.
Myth #6: Carrying a gun for self-defense makes you safer.Fact-check: In 2011, nearly 10 times more people were shot and killed in arguments than by civilians trying to stop a crime.• In one survey, nearly 1% of Americans reported using guns to defend themselves or their property. However, a closer look at their claims found that more than 50% involved using guns in an aggressive manner, such as escalating an argument.• A Philadelphia study found that the odds of an assault victim being shot were 4.5 times greater if he carried a gun. His odds of being killed were 4.2 times greater.
Myth #7: Guns make women safer.Fact-check: In 2010, nearly 6 times more women were shot by husbands, boyfriends, and ex-partners than murdered by male strangers.• A woman’s chances of being killed by her abuser increase more than 5 times if he has access to a gun.• One study found that women in states with higher gun ownership rates were 4.9 times more likely to be murdered by a gun than women in states with lower gun ownership rates.
Again, some people insist that gun ownership is more important than human lives. To them, it doesn’t matter that over 200,000 Americans have died from gunshots since 9/11!
The most ludicrous NRA myth is that 2.5 million crimes prevented BS.. What is not a myth, by police and DOJ statistics (CDC is prohibited from doing or completing studies on gun safety) is that where an ARMED criminal goes after an ARMED citizen, the citizen who responds is shot (fortunately not killed that often) in over 90% of reported cases. The old west myth of drawing faster than a guy with a gun already out, is just that, a total myth.
Also, reading “The Armed Citizen” column in NRA publications gives me far more reason to limit access to guns by idiots, not just “criminals” or “crazies”. Time and again multiple rounds are fired by the citizen, missing the target, or shooting someone in a situation where cops would be on videos, and arrested and convicted of criminal actions.
“Stand your ground”, as Zimmerman proved, is totally out of control in states that recognize it, and don’t regulate firearms posession.
“Thank you for that tirade, but II am still waiting for you to define something good the NRA has accomplished.”I think there are effectively two NRA’s. One runs gun safety programs, offers training on handling & marksmanship & does some good things. This is the NRA known to the rank & file members. The leadership is run by the gun industry & mainly focuses on lobbying against any & all reforms. This is the NRA reviled by people who think there are reasonable measures we can take to reduce gun deaths in the U.S.
Well, the “Good Woman with a Gun” who tried to shoot what she thought Might Be Shoplifters was just convicted of Reckless Discharge of a Gun, sentenced to 18 months of probation and cannot apply for another concealed carry permit until 2023..Oh, and she’s Mad about it.She still thinks that Blazing away at a moving car was “Just Trying to Help”.

I see where you’re confused- they’re on the same highway going the same direction- it’s a mobius strip.

They did accomplish the bizarro-world myth of “2.5 million defensive uses.” That’s been good for gun sales.

Is Payne simply a shill for the NRA? At the least, he’s helping gun sales ….
