Man: Okay, kids! I'm Dan Spinnerack. I want you to tell us your name and what kind of cartoons you like. Boy: My name is Andre Chang. I like cartoons with lots of superheroes fighting lots of supervillains with lots of explosions. BHUFWOOOUGHM! Like that. Girl: My name is Loris Slothrop and I like little cute animal cartoons with big eyes who're also magic robot vampire ninjas, but sensitive. Petey: My name is Petey Otterloop and I like Little Neuro cartoons because nothing ever happens in them. Boy: BORING! Girl: His eyes are too small.

The comment is probably more apt if about Petey, but is more likely referring to Little Neuro. To Loris, any character who doesn’t look like it stepped out of a Margaret Keane painting would have eyes too small to suit her.
Poor Petey. This may not turn out as well for him as I’d hoped. The three all work in the same medium, but in incompatible genres…
shytimes, the similarities are actually quite remarkable. My hair was light brown rather than black, but other than that, he’s me, even to the flannel-shirt-over-T-shirt ensemble…
(By the way, I’m actually about midway through “Gravity’s Rainbow” right now, which I have to imagine is RT’s source for “Slothrop” [is Loris Tyrone’s granddaughter? great-granddaughter?]. Earlier in the book was also the first reference I’ve come across to Ernesto Lecouna outside of this strip.)

It seems that, once per decade, A Cartoon comes along that becomes the Ultimate Cartoon Icon for that time…Cul de Sac IS that cartoon for our times…it stands alone in artistic and social commentary. PLEASE don’t ever leave us…my mornings begin with CdS.
