I seem to remember that in “All Creatures Great and Small” James Herriot assured an old lady near death that her dogs would go the same place she would. Comforting to her, but deliberately left vague.

Cats, on the other hand, are reputed to have eight after-lives. Does this mean that they have that many souls?
