The News Cycle. A deranged man gets the idea he could die famous. He goes out and commits a horrendous act of violence. The news media gives the horrendous act saturation coverage. The killer's name and face blanket the media for days. The cycle starts over.

Ratings! More profits! It’s all about the public’s “Right to Know”! It’s protected by the First Amendment! It’s morally….., er,….

There have been several serious academic studies that have concluded the dramatic media coverage really does lead to copycats trying to get the same recognition. The studies recommend minimal coverage and not to publish any of the offender’s biography. If they receive minimal recognition and coverage, others are not motivated to try to be as “famous”.

On a more personal note, I really don’t understand why the public wants to immerse themselves in these horrific crimes people commit? Is it really entertaining or funny or uplifting? There are many people who do great things in terms of accomplishments and helping others or overcoming adversity. I would trade in the daily fare of blood soaked news for something inspiring anytime. For some reason the public seems to have an appetite for misery and horror. .

I’m with the reporter (can’t find his name now) who refused to give the a-hole who murdered John Lennon the glory of putting his name in print, referring to him only as I just did, minus the mealy-mouthed minced oath that I employ to protect your young eyes.

Of course, if the would be killer couldn’t lay hands on lethal weaponry designed to kill from a distance, he couldn’t do much damage. But that’s too much logic for the Lords of the Universe to bear.

Thank you Matt for covering the reason we have so many nut cases killing people.

LOL! OK, point taken. The friendly neighborhood terrorist was talking about everything but guns. Funny how fertilizer bombs, suicide vests and flying planes into buildings is already against the law. I guess the terrorist just doesn’t know what he is talking about..Golly willikers! I love it when people try to prove how smart they are and end up making a fool of themselves.

’Toon merely portrays perfectly the state of “news” and society today, including all those copycats, or chickenhawks calling for more war so they can keep it impersonal, at least for them.

Wrong yet again. But keep up the blatant lying and exaggerating. You may think it is funny, but others look at how dishonest your posts are and realize you really don’t have an honest argument.

And if I were the typical liberal coward, I would report you for personal attacks. As it is, you are apparently confused between an unrelated opinion and what it means to have an honest argument in a debate. Some day maybe you will see the light and understand the difference.
