How true. A great deal of the problem is caused by business owners (i.e. people with money and influence) taking advantage of the desperate poor (people with out money or power). The Republican strategy is to blame and punish those who are weak. How about if the Republicans who have control of the House and Senate try enacting meaningful immigration reform? They’re just too lazy and gutless. Instead they only offer election year grandstanding.
Yes, if you study actual history, it is kind of amazing that the Statue of Liberty was ever even accepted. Especially as it was a gift from the hated (by the ultra conservatives here at least, and in the past also) French!!
And let’s not forget the way Jewish immigrants were portrayed in the popular press,[]And the Chinese managed to get around the Exclusion Act when all the immigration records were destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. After that ( if I recall correctly ) they were able to use a loophole that allowed Chinese immigrants into this country who already had family here.
For some reason it amazes me that we never learn from our own history. Every time there is any sort of economic downturn we blame the “other”, the immigrants. Everything bad – crime, unemployment, poverty, suffering of every variety, is declared to have been caused by “them.” It never is, and never has been, caused by “them.” It always is, and always has been, caused by our own greed. Just as it is now.
I think that anybody who has lost his/her job as a result of an immigrant taking it does have a legitimate complaint. That hasn’t happened to me or mine, but I have heard of it happening to many others. It’s a conundrum. Maybe the problem is really just too many people (all over the world) now. And at the way we’re overpopulating, the problem can only get worse. I can see no solution.
Did you even READ the article you cited ? “Linda…Chavez, a self-professed conservative who worked in President Reagan’s administration, said it’s irresponsible to say immigrants are taking advantage of the country’s welfare system any more than native-born Americans.” …“she said many benefits counted in the study are going to U.S.-born children of immigrants, skewing the findings even more…When you take all of those issues into account, (the report) is less worrisome,”

There is a reason why you cannot see Lady Liberty’s right hand in this picture. It’s because she’s holding up a middle finger instead of a torch.

moderateisntleft“Election year?” Would that we could have it so brief, never mind less than a couple months like civilized countries do.

Robert LandersTo say nothing of the delays in converting the Bedlow Island fort into a suitable base in time for the Centennial.
