Nice try, Earl. (Could Opal’s ficus be in the compost heap?)

Aww so sweet of Earl to replace their anniversary plant. Tomorrow’s strip will show Opal thanking Earl for his thoughtfulness.

Earl would make a terrible crook. He’s too careless.

Chinese yews, on the other hand are rugged and can grow quite large.I planted one in front of my house in Arizona that I wrapped a small string of holiday lights on for the Christmas season..

Not that many years later, it required a ladder and several strings of lights to decorate it !

Opal killed a ficus tree?!? I have one, and NOTHING gets to that tree. I had to cut it down to the ground after a surprise frost (in Florida, no less) and the crazy thing is back up to six feet, and all I have to do is water it every now and again. Of course, it IS FL—most anything grows down here if you just leave it alone. . .

Nobody has noticed that the dog is holding the store receipt for the ficus plant. Looks like opal gave up on the dead plant & secretly replaced it with a new one.

    It’s the thought that counts!

Although it would be truly amazing if a plant really did come back to life.

With a ficus, if you over water it, the leaves turn yellow and fall off. If you under water it, the leaves turn yellow and fall off. I’ve killed many of them.

Next door neighbor has a ficus tree and my gardener is constantly cleaning up the leaves on my property, including my driveway.
