Poor Bilan, everyone jumping on you, and all you did was provide a little information. Sorry about that.Now, for those who need to know but don’t want to look for themselves, (citation below), in ancient times through several cultures, cracks in the earth, walls, doors…pretty much anywhere, could be an opening to another world, usually the under world. To step on a crack was to tempt fate and generally bring woe to oneself and one’s family. This included broken backs. So cracks were to be avoided if possible. The rhymes just made it easy to remember to avoid the cracks.
