The happiest marriages tend to lead to the quickest re-marriages. Grandma, after almost 50 years, and the almost-80 year old man she spent a happy decade with, for instance. Proud to have had him standing with us. She cared for my grandfather, Ted was the reason she survived breast cancer, she cared for him his last months. But the years between those were very good for both.

At least she didn’t specify the replacement’s age range.

Of course she’ll be uglier. Ben still sees his lovely wife as a mix of what she looks like today and the face he’s seen since their first meeting all those years ago. Only when he makes a concerted effort, fleeting and uncomfortable, does he see the age she has become.

Love is that “thing” that allows us to see a woman 57, 67, 77 years old as the women we met and not the woman we would see if we only met today.

And greatly to our advantage, it works both ways. We all see who we’re with, but more importantly, we see the person as Why we’re with them.

Trust me, to him she’s as beautiful as she’s always been….because she is.
