Actually, you’re supposed to jump off halfway down. Except on days when the grass is wet and the soles of your shoes get wet, Then jumping off half way down could cause you to break your wrist.

I believe that “Slide, Charlie Brown! Slide!” was the title of a later Peanuts collection book. I can still see the cover in my mind. BIG cartoon speech balloon with (I believe) 4 of the characters below it, shouting.

At least this isn’t the one where he cost his team a game by sliding into home base.
